Reconstruction of Kobanê – European Diplomats meet in Amed

Diplomats from EU member countries have met at the Amed (Diyarbakır) Chamber of Commerce and Industry to discuss the reconstruction of Kobanê.
Diplomats from Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the UK and Switzerland led by Ireneus Fidos of the EU Turkey Delegation have met in Amed. Fidos firstly said she was delighted to be in Amed with such a large group of diplomats meeting executives of the  Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DTSO). She added that the visit had enabled them to speak to business people in the region and ask them for their views on the peace process. She said that a lasting peace would lead to growth in the regional economy and improved employment prospects,
DTSO deputy secretary Metin Aslan made assessments of the economic situation in the region, after which he asked for representatives of EU countries to play a more active role in the reconstruction process in Kobanê. He added that support for Turkey’s EU membership in the region was higher than in the country as a whole.
DTSO Executive Committee member Mehmet Tekin said that they had visited  Rojava two weeks ago and witnessed the devastation there, which was even worse than they had imagined. He added that there was an urgent need for food and medical aid and that hospitals and health centres needed energy.
