A delegation led by the People’s Democratic Party co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and the representative of the HDP in Europe Eyyup Doru met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras as part of a fraternal meeting in Athens today.
The issues of refugees and immigration in general, the struggle of the Kurdish people in the Middle East and in Turkey and the Syrian conflict as a whole were discussed at the meeting during which M.Demirtas explained that the current Turkish government is using the dramatic situation of refugees as an instrument of blackmail towards the European Union and represented one of the real causes behind the current war in the Middle East and in Turkey.
He also denounced the brutal war in violation of international law by the current government against the Kurdish towns that has been under siege for months, saying that until today, more than 300 civilians have been killed following shellings in the cities of Diyarbakir, Cizre, Silopi and Sirnak.
The meeting ended with an agreement on future cooperation which will aim to bring a political solution to the conflict in Turkey, Syria, and Cyprus, and will offer an alternative to the issue of the refugee crisis.
