The Erdogan regime’s persecution of the Kurdish people and HDP is intolerable. 55 deputies from different political groups of the Congress of Deputies condemn these actions and demand democracy in Turkey.

The hearings on the closure case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) will take place in Ankara on April 11, just one month after the hearings on the Kobane case later this week. In both cases, the charge is based on the existence of links between the HDP and the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) in order to promote its closure; links that have so far not been proven in a process with judicial guarantees and independence and that have been challenged by independent courts such as the European Court of Human Rights.
These and other legal proceedings against the HDP have been aimed primarily at the political and judicial persecution of the party and its members, resulting in the imprisonment of its leaders – including its former co-chair-the deportation of dozens of people into exile, and the freezing in January of the party’s accounts so that it could not receive public funds for the May elections – a decision overturned by the Constitutional Court on March 9. Although the initiation of legal proceedings against the HDP began with the party’s entry into parliament in 2015, the final hearings of the main cases are taking place just months before the elections, which is politically and electorally motivated and highlights the limited separation of power that currently exists in Turkey.
For all these reasons, the undersigned members wish to express their concern and denounce the political and judicial persecution of the HDP, as well as the rest of the opposition, activists and human rights organizations. We call for the commitment of the European institutions and member states to democracy and the separation of powers in Turkey, and to the guarantee of free and fair elections as a vital element of democracy. There is a need to open a process of dialogue and to use the political, legal and diplomatic tools available at the European level, with the aim of ensuring fair trials and guarantees for the proceedings against the HDP, an end to political and judicial persecution, and a truly democratic election process.
