A HDP’s delegation composed of Eyyup Doru, HDP’s representative in Europe and HDP deputies Tuğba Hezer Öztürk and Faysal Sarıyıldız, had a meeting with the chairman of the political group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S & D) Gianni Pittella in the European Parliament today to discuss the current situation in Turkey and possible solutions regarding the fate of the currently detained HDP’s MPs and Kurdish representatives. The delegation also asked the chairman of the S & D to discuss this urgent situation by including it on the agenda at the next plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg on 24 November.
Mr Pittella declared that he agreed with the representatives of the People’s Democratic Party, judging the authoritarian drift of the government in Turkey totally unacceptable and stressed that, as socialist groups, they were planning to organize an urgent debate with proposed resolutions at the plenary session in Strasbourg. He said they were also planning to send a delegation on behalf of the PES (including S & D vice-president Knut Fleckenstein and PES president Sergei Stanishev) to Turkey in order to visit the HDP’s co-chair Selahattin Demirtas in prison.
